A Day In The Life Of A Beauty PR Intern

How it started…

Back in June I applied online with a usual CV and cover letter, together with links to my social media and blog. I was then lucky enough to be invited for an interview in June where I was asked to create a content calendar for a weeks worth of Instagram posts. I came to the interview with my carefully thought out calendar and notes about the company and what I thought I could do to improve their social media. To my delight they loved my ideas and soon after the interview I was offered the position.

What it entailed…

My first day was the morning after my graduation, my journey began the same way it would everyday for the next 5 weeks. A 35 minute train ride and a short tube trail from Marylebone to Green Park. On a typical day I would arrive at my office building (Berkeley Square House) have a quick catch up with my colleagues then head over to the Boutique. Nails and Brows Mayfair is a high-end boutique specialising in a range of treatments and are home to their own brow products, Beauty Edit Mayfair. A big role of mine was to create content for the brand’s Instagram, so I would take photos in the boutique of pretty nails, videos of brow treatments and so on. Other than the random tasks like delivering a package to the oh so elegant Fortnum and Mason, I would oversee the social media engagement or perhaps design content on Canva. Sometimes I would use Hootsuite to schedule posts and get an insight into statistics, but this is just to name a few.

My internship has now comes to an end, no more passing by The Ritz every morning, no more popping into Joe & the Juice on my lunch break and no more getting squished on the tube. Above all else I had a lot of fun working at Nails and Brows, it was a lovely environment to work in and everyone was so helpful. Each day I arrived at the office I was excited to see what I would be doing because no day was ever the same.

The questions people may ask…Is it paid?  No, unfortunately most internships aren’t paid. How did you afford it? Nails & Brows contributed towards my travel and lunch, I live around 30/40 minutes away from London. Is there a job a the end? No, they didn’t have a vacancy available, the team was very small and I was made aware pretty early on that I wasn’t guaranteed permanent employment at the end of it. What did I get out of it? Besides confidence and experience, I gained contacts in the industry and a reference from my boss.

What now?

I am now looking for a permanent digital marketing role, Nails and Brows made me realise that not only was this sector something I thoroughly enjoyed, but also gave me the confidence to believe it is something I do really well. Wish me luck!

My 4 Favourite Products For Glowy Skin, Shimmery Eyes and Glossy Nails

Skin

A dewy complexion seems to be the preferred finish now, and it’s easy to see why. Dewy skin excuses youth, health and vibrancy.  To achieve a glowy base I have two favourites.

Illuminator – ICONIC LONDON

How I Use It:  I use the shade ‘Shine’, a pale, pink-toned colour on my face for nighttime looks. I apply the highlighter on my cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow and blend it in with my fingers, I found using a beauty blender got rid of too much product.

Price: £30 (but there are always influencers promoting it and offering discount codes, so look out for them!)

L’oreal Paris True Match Highlighter Liquid Glow

How I Use It: I use the shade ‘Icy Glow’, (it also comes in Golden Glow, if you want a more bronzey highlight.) I apply this to my skin almost every day, I put this on my cheekbones, nose and cupid’s bow, (it also works well as an all over primer.) This product is great if you don’t want to wear much makeup but still want to look refreshed and can also be applied to the brow bone to accentuate the eye area.

Price: £8.99 (But! Feel Unique is offering it at 30 % off at the moment)

Eyes

Urban Decay Moondust Glitter

How I Use It: I use this in the shade Cosmic, a very pale nude tone. I put this on at night time when I want to add some glitz and glamour to my makeup look. Depending on the style I’m going for, I either put it all over the lid or just on the brow bone. This highly pigmented shadow is very easy to apply, it feels like a cream but goes on like a powder.

Price: £16

Nails

Sally Hansen Colour Therapy

This shiny nail varnish shade is stunning. In some lights it appears more pink and in others more silver. Not only does it make your nails look beautiful but it nourishes them too because it is infused with organ oil to give instant moisture to your nails.

Price: £8.99

Review: ‘Oils of Life’ by The Body Shop

I recently decided to switch up my skincare routine. I didn’t have a problem with my previous regime, I just felt like my skin could be better. My face felt a bit dull and dry so I decided to start searching for a different moisturiser, (along with replacing my cleanser and toner.) I was originally using Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, a cult classic in the beauty world. It was working fine for me but I wanted to something richer in consistency and cheaper in price.

I opted for the Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Cream by The Body Shop. What drew me to this product was the ‘oils of life’ title. I was considering investing in a facial oil or serum as well as a moisturiser for added hydration, but this product seemed to be the best of both worlds. This moisturiser infuses, “3 oils from around the world, known for their revitalising and repairing properties on skin – Black Cumin seed oil from Egypt, Camellia seed oil from China and Rosehip seed oil from Chile.” (thebodyshop.com)

Here is the low-down:

Packaging: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

I love the luxury feel of the packaging, there is something about glass that makes something feel classy. This product would definitely look great on your dressing table. Unfortunately it misses out on a final star for not being very travel-friendly.

Price: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

For 50ml you’re looking at paying £26.00, so no, not cheap but I believe the price is somewhat justified. I personally judge value by quality and quantity, this best seller is made from plenty of rich ingredients. It’s thick, creamy consistency also means you only need a small amount, it has lasted me for a couple of months and I use it twice a day.

Performance: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

In regards to the claims made by The Body Shop…

  • Leaves skin feeling silky-soft – agree
  • Ensures almost affinity to skin – agree
  • Comfortable but light and non-greasy – agree
  • Revitalises skin – agree
  • Reduces appearance of ageing – this brings me on to my next point…

Who is it for?

This product is for anyone and everyone, it is anti-aging but also works great on my 21 year old face. I have combination skin which means i have dry areas and oily areas, it nourishes my dry patches and doesn’t add to any oily areas.

Is it ethical?

The Body Shop does not test on animals.

Two Skincare Products I Can’t Live Without

Today I am talking about my top two favourite skincare products of all time. The first is the Ultra Facial Cream by Kiehl’s. I have been using this product for just under a year now and I won’t be changing my moisturiser any time soon.

Who is it for?

Anyone and everyone can use this product, it is made for all skin types. My skin is combination, it gets oily in places and dry in others. My skin is also sensitive, this cream doesn’t upset it.

Price?

50ml : £24.50

125ml : £45.00

Does it last?

I replace this moisturiser once every 3 months and I use it twice a day. (I buy the 50ml)

Results?

It seems to have calmed my skin, it is free from harsh chemicals or fragrances and doesn’t leave my skin feeling oily, despite the rich creamy texture. I can tell I am using better quality ingredients on my face.

Ingredients?

Antarcticine (Glacial Glycoprotein Extract) – it further helps to protect skin from extremely cold temperatures, facilitating skin’s retention of natural water reserves.

Imperata Cylindrica (Desert Plant Extract) – helps skin to store and retain moisture efficiently – even in the driest weather conditions.

Squalane (Perhydrosqualene or perhydrosqualene vegetal) –  helps restore skin’s natural moisture balance to keep it extra soft and supple.

Packaging?

I love a luxury face cream but sometimes fancy packaging isn’t practical. This Kiehl’s cream comes in either a 50ml or 125ml plastic container, it is lightweight, clean and small enough to travel with.

The second product I can’t live without is Ginzing by Origins. I was gifted this eye cream over Christmas and admittedly I haven’t been using it for long but it’s been a must in my skincare routine recently.

Who is it for?

All skin types. Specifically if you get either puffy, dry or dark under eyes.

Price?

50ml : £25.00

Does it last?

I have been using this product twice a day (morning and evening) every day since Christmas and i’m not even a quarter of the way through.

Results?

Like the name suggests, it ‘zings’ your under eyes awake with its cooling solution. It wakes me up in the morning and de-puffs and brightens my eyes. At night I use it before bed so my eyes look fresher the next morning. Overall I can say I have noticed a change to the darkness of my eye bags.

Ingredients?

Active ingredient are coffee (hence why it wakes you up and lemon peel.

(full ingredient list) https://www.origins.co.uk/product/15352/42745/skincare/moisturise/moisturiser/ginzing/ultra-hydrating-energy-boosting-cream

Packaging?

This eye cream comes in a 50ml pot, but don’t be fooled by the small-scale because a little does go a long way! (and is very travel friendly too). The vibrant orange packaging will brighten up any makeup bag.

Bubble Bath Essentials

Today is Sunday, the day of rest – some say. There is nothing quite as relaxing as a warm, foamy, aromatic bubble bath. Whether you are a bath bomb, salts or oil kind of person (or all of the above!) I’ve got you covered.

I am going to start by sharing my personal favourites that I like to use, followed by some non beauty bubble bath essentials!

  1. Unicorn HornLush (£4.50)

https://uk.lush.com/products/valentines-day/unicorn-horn

Unicorn Horn is back for Valentines! This is a Lush favourite for many and I can see why.  I can’t help but rave about this product, not only does it look magical and transforms any bubble bath, the smell is a lovely subtle floral-sweetness with notes of feminine lavender. You can break off pieces of the bubble bar and save some for later or use the whole bar at once for a more luxurious bath experience. Either way the water will always turn a gorgeous shade of pink. It’s pretty much a given that if you use this product you’re guaranteed a pretty bath and it will be fun to use, but what are the benefits? I have found with this product that it is best to use in the evening as a winding down method. Lavender has a reputation for being a calming fragrance and the Neroli oil not only gives you silky smooth skin but according to Lush, increases serotonin in the brain which helps you feel content and happy.

Ingredients (via Lush.co.uk)

Sodium Bicarbonate,Cream of Tartar,Sodium Laureate Sulfate,Laurel Betaine,Cornflour,Perfume,Lavender Oil,Ylang Ylang Oil,Neroli Oil,Titanium Dioxide,Synthetic Fluorphlogopite,Tin Oxide,*Citral,*Limonene,*Linalool

2. Smoothie Star  – Soap & Glory (£10.00)

Okay so technically not something you use directly in a bubble bath but a vital product for me. I use this as soon as I get out, even after using a heavenly bubble bar that hydrates your skin, to make it last longer a moisturiser can really help. This body milk by Soap & Glory is really unique to any moisturisers I’ve used before, it takes an abundance of ingredients and blends in all into one 500ml bottle (hence the ‘smoothie’ reference). This product is loaded with cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil, all products we may use on their own to moisturise (full list of ingredients below). The name is also referencing the scent: oat, yoghurt, honey and brown sugar- it smells like a luxurious hearty breakfast. Another handy element to this product is that it is a body milk so unlike a butter or oil it sinks into skin quicker, it’s not as messy and a little goes a long way.

3. Sweet Mandarin and Grapefruit Moisturising Shower Creme – Baylis & Harding (£6.00)

Not only does this product look lovely stacked in your shower/bath with its classy, luxurious packaging but it feels it too. The best way to describe this essential is silky, from the bottle’s feel to the peach coloured formula. It is a happy medium between a shower gel and creme, enough of a gel to lather up on skin with a luffa and enough of a creme to moisturise. While we may still be in Winter, a lot of us (me included) are dreaming about Spring and this bath creme makes you feel a little closer to the brighter season with its sweet mandarin and grapefruit sent, it’s a great ‘pick me up’.

I wanted to include some essentials that can’t technically go in the bath with you, but help your bubble bath experience:

January Favourites : ‘Bunny Moon’ Jelly Face Mask (Lush)

£6.95 @ Lush : https://uk.lush.com/products/bunny-moon

I was lucky enough to receive this face mask for Christmas from my sister, it comes in a small pot (but a little really does go a long way!) which beams with a layer of golden ‘dust’ that has been sprinkled on top. The smell is subtle yet calming, the ingredients include camomile, vanilla and honey so it works well for my sensitive skin. You only need a small amount of this product – just pinch off a piece and rub it into dry hands to forms into a paste. I usually keep it on for anywhere between 10-20 minutes and when I take it off (with warm water) my skin feels SO soft! and unsurprisingly this gives me a moon-like glow. I can’t wait to try the other kinds in the jelly Lush range, overall a very happy bunny (moon).
