A Day at Champney’s Tring

9am – Breakfast

A couple of weeks ago, (as a graduation gift from my sister) I encountered my very first spa day. We arrived in the morning for our complimentary breakfast at around 9am, the buffet was full of pretty plates and even prettier prepared food. The dishes ranged from figs and cream cheese to bitesized granola and yogurt parfaits.

10am – Zumba

In regards to the fitness classes, they ranged from aqua aerobics to legs, bums and tums classes. The majority of the classes were free with the exception of a few. It was my first time doing a Zumba class and while it was far more intense than I had anticipated, it was also far more fun too. We were laughing almost the entire duration of the class, (60 mins).

11:30am – Tea

After the Zumba session, we needed to refuel with tea and cake. We sat in the sun in our white robes and slippers munching on delicious snacks, (I would highly recommend the carrot cake and the banana cake.) We then had a little stroll around the grounds and laid on the sun loungers.

12:00 – Relax

It was then time to take full advantage of the spa facilities. We took a dip in the pool and jacuzzi before dozing off on the water beds.

13:30 – Lunch

Champney’s is a health spa, so the buffet was clearly very healthy. There were lots of options for food (especially if you’re vegan or veggie). The buffet was full of lots of healthy carb varieties, veggies with some lean fish, chicken breast, tofu and more. Pudding was a choice of fruit, healthy crumble or yogurt (or both, you could get as much as you liked.)

15:00 – Jumpa

A little while after lunch, we decided to participate in another exercise class. Jumpa consisted of HIIT (high intensity interval training) circuits involving mini trampolines, the class lasted 1 hour.

17:00 – Facials

Facials are not included in the price of the day and you do need to pay extra for them, our facials were around £45 each. This involved a small face, neck, hand and arm massage for circulation followed by the therapist using a range of 5 – 10 Champneys products on your skin. This included a toner, moisturiser and exfoliator. At the end of the facial the therapist also gives you a skin consultation.

Overall I left the spa (at 18:00) feeling refreshed and revitalised, as expected. What was different was the amount the spa offered as part of the day package and the variety of activities and facilities available. I would highly recommend Champney’s Tring.

Review: ‘Oils of Life’ by The Body Shop

I recently decided to switch up my skincare routine. I didn’t have a problem with my previous regime, I just felt like my skin could be better. My face felt a bit dull and dry so I decided to start searching for a different moisturiser, (along with replacing my cleanser and toner.) I was originally using Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, a cult classic in the beauty world. It was working fine for me but I wanted to something richer in consistency and cheaper in price.

I opted for the Oils of Life Intensely Revitalising Cream by The Body Shop. What drew me to this product was the ‘oils of life’ title. I was considering investing in a facial oil or serum as well as a moisturiser for added hydration, but this product seemed to be the best of both worlds. This moisturiser infuses, “3 oils from around the world, known for their revitalising and repairing properties on skin – Black Cumin seed oil from Egypt, Camellia seed oil from China and Rosehip seed oil from Chile.” (thebodyshop.com)

Here is the low-down:

Packaging: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

I love the luxury feel of the packaging, there is something about glass that makes something feel classy. This product would definitely look great on your dressing table. Unfortunately it misses out on a final star for not being very travel-friendly.

Price: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

For 50ml you’re looking at paying £26.00, so no, not cheap but I believe the price is somewhat justified. I personally judge value by quality and quantity, this best seller is made from plenty of rich ingredients. It’s thick, creamy consistency also means you only need a small amount, it has lasted me for a couple of months and I use it twice a day.

Performance: ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

In regards to the claims made by The Body Shop…

  • Leaves skin feeling silky-soft – agree
  • Ensures almost affinity to skin – agree
  • Comfortable but light and non-greasy – agree
  • Revitalises skin – agree
  • Reduces appearance of ageing – this brings me on to my next point…

Who is it for?

This product is for anyone and everyone, it is anti-aging but also works great on my 21 year old face. I have combination skin which means i have dry areas and oily areas, it nourishes my dry patches and doesn’t add to any oily areas.

Is it ethical?

The Body Shop does not test on animals.

The Magic Gang @ The Old Fire Station 04/02/18

Brighton quartet The Magic Gang, (who are regularly compared to 90s band Weezer) performed at the quirky Old Fire Station in Bournemouth last night.

The band have recently announced a March tour beginning in Birmingham on 22nd March, before calling off in Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol and London. They are also going to be featured on BBC Radio 1 tonight at 7:30pm with Annie Mac with their new single ‘Getting Along’.

The men stroll onto the humble stage, holding out for a hello. After an unrecognisable track to open the show, the second song ‘All This Way’ grabs the crowd and causes a happy sing-song.

After the third song ‘Only Waiting’, from their 2016 EP, the band stop for a short beer break and chat with the audience. (Rhythm guitar and vocals) Jack Kaye asks how everyone is doing and queries if it’s okay that they play a few new songs for us.

The new track, ‘Getting Along’ (that is due to release tomorrow) is slightly heavier than previous releases, still The Magic Gang have managed to find the harmonious balance between rock and pop with a generous splash of soul.

The further into the set they get, it is clear to see they’re not just bandmates, but real mates. They all met when they were 16 or 17, Paeris Giles (drums) and Kristian Smith (lead guitar and vocals) were previously in a two piece band together. The band perform like they’re having the time of their lives, Smith and Kaye regularly chose to share one microphone and and face each other whilst playing, instead of the audience. The giggles and carefree attitude became contagious to the audience.

Succeeding the 8th or 9th song of the night, the band announce that they are going to treat us to some new songs (that haven’t yet been released) and reveal that we are the first crowd to hear them.

After a few new tunes and even more older crowd-pleasers, the band pay their thanks and inform us that the next song will be their last. They sing us out with ‘All That I Want Is You’, pints are no longer kept tight in hands and the youthful mob falls into a frenzy.

Like a lot of shows with loyal fans, when the band finishes the crowd finds it hard to accept. As the men left the stage a “one more song!” chant broke out, usually this tactic is unsuccessful but surprisingly the guys return to the stage, showcasing their loyalty to fans and perform their 2015 hit ‘No Fun’.

The venue (that opened in 1995) feels like the perfect spot for The Magic Gang to perform before setting off for their UK tour. Now living in Brighton, the band are all originally from Bournemouth and host a 90s-like persona (music and style). The Old Fire Station is a modest yet special venue, with its unique architecture and interesting decor, fitting to a band who are humble yet distinctive and captivating.

Bubble Bath Essentials

Today is Sunday, the day of rest – some say. There is nothing quite as relaxing as a warm, foamy, aromatic bubble bath. Whether you are a bath bomb, salts or oil kind of person (or all of the above!) I’ve got you covered.

I am going to start by sharing my personal favourites that I like to use, followed by some non beauty bubble bath essentials!

  1. Unicorn HornLush (£4.50)

Unicorn Horn is back for Valentines! This is a Lush favourite for many and I can see why.  I can’t help but rave about this product, not only does it look magical and transforms any bubble bath, the smell is a lovely subtle floral-sweetness with notes of feminine lavender. You can break off pieces of the bubble bar and save some for later or use the whole bar at once for a more luxurious bath experience. Either way the water will always turn a gorgeous shade of pink. It’s pretty much a given that if you use this product you’re guaranteed a pretty bath and it will be fun to use, but what are the benefits? I have found with this product that it is best to use in the evening as a winding down method. Lavender has a reputation for being a calming fragrance and the Neroli oil not only gives you silky smooth skin but according to Lush, increases serotonin in the brain which helps you feel content and happy.

Sodium Bicarbonate,Cream of Tartar,Sodium Laureate Sulfate,Laurel Betaine,Cornflour,Perfume,Lavender Oil,Ylang Ylang Oil,Neroli Oil,Titanium Dioxide,Synthetic Fluorphlogopite,Tin Oxide,*Citral,*Limonene,*Linalool

Okay so technically not something you use directly in a bubble bath but a vital product for me. I use this as soon as I get out, even after using a heavenly bubble bar that hydrates your skin, to make it last longer a moisturiser can really help. This body milk by Soap & Glory is really unique to any moisturisers I’ve used before, it takes an abundance of ingredients and blends in all into one 500ml bottle (hence the ‘smoothie’ reference). This product is loaded with cocoa butter, shea butter and coconut oil, all products we may use on their own to moisturise (full list of ingredients below). The name is also referencing the scent: oat, yoghurt, honey and brown sugar- it smells like a luxurious hearty breakfast. Another handy element to this product is that it is a body milk so unlike a butter or oil it sinks into skin quicker, it’s not as messy and a little goes a long way.

3. Sweet Mandarin and Grapefruit Moisturising Shower Creme – Baylis & Harding (£6.00)

Not only does this product look lovely stacked in your shower/bath with its classy, luxurious packaging but it feels it too. The best way to describe this essential is silky, from the bottle’s feel to the peach coloured formula. It is a happy medium between a shower gel and creme, enough of a gel to lather up on skin with a luffa and enough of a creme to moisturise. While we may still be in Winter, a lot of us (me included) are dreaming about Spring and this bath creme makes you feel a little closer to the brighter season with its sweet mandarin and grapefruit sent, it’s a great ‘pick me up’.

I wanted to include some essentials that can’t technically go in the bath with you, but help your bubble bath experience:

January Favourites : ‘Bunny Moon’ Jelly Face Mask (Lush)

£6.95 @ Lush : https://uk.lush.com/products/bunny-moon

I was lucky enough to receive this face mask for Christmas from my sister, it comes in a small pot (but a little really does go a long way!) which beams with a layer of golden ‘dust’ that has been sprinkled on top. The smell is subtle yet calming, the ingredients include camomile, vanilla and honey so it works well for my sensitive skin. You only need a small amount of this product – just pinch off a piece and rub it into dry hands to forms into a paste. I usually keep it on for anywhere between 10-20 minutes and when I take it off (with warm water) my skin feels SO soft! and unsurprisingly this gives me a moon-like glow. I can’t wait to try the other kinds in the jelly Lush range, overall a very happy bunny (moon).
